With a sigh, Nex plopped down beside Jacob, her back on the wall, her side just brushing his. Leaning her head back against the wall, she watched Jacob out of the corner of her eye. Her first impulse was to grab him, comfort him, the motherly instinct every woman carries kicking in. But she stayed where she was, remembering he didn't really like to be touched.
"That little son of a bitch." she muttered, closing her eyes briefly. "I'd love to get my hands on him." She glanced over at Jacob and felt a sharp pain in her eyes. Touching her face, she realized she'd begun to cry. Blinking furiously, she tried to stop the silent tears. She slowed them, but a few kept falling.
"Jacob, you don't need to stay with your father. You can move out and live on your own. Down here there aren't really any laws, a four year old could move out if he wanted. There are ways out of it. And --" she paused, not sure how to continue. "I have a house I could give you. Or you can sleep at my place. It's definitely big enough." Nex attempted a small smile.
She couldn't believe what this poor kid went through. Especially with a weight this heavy on his shoulders. His 'father' disgusted her. The sick bastard. Threatening his son's life. It was just -- he just -- Nex couldn't even explain it.

Jacob felt her side brush him. He wanted to pull away, but he felt as if he were locked into place by some force.
"I-I c-can't leave," he whimpered. No one could understand the boy's reasoning. He truly loved his father, but that was because of the precious memories from when his mother was alive. After her death, he stared drinking, started bringing home strange women to fill the void, started resorting to abusing Jacob to take out his anger at humans.
"'You're my son, Jacob,' he once told me," Jacob said, smiling at the warmth of the memory. "'And I'm your father. I'll always love you, no matter how stupid I get.'" Biting his lip again, Jacob lowered his gaze. He got stupid. He got desperate. He just wanted his wife back.
"My dad's not a bad person, Nexilia. He just wants our old life back. He wants my mom back, he wants the years to back up. My mom was what held everything together. But then she--" Jacob stopped himself, sobbing harshly. He covered his eyes, wailing in sorrow. He wanted his mother back just as much as his father. Only he was the one who suffered in silence, and was punished for showing too much of his feelings. It would remind his father too much, and he would grown angry from his sadness.
Jacob finally felt the cooling snap inside of him. His personal space need broke. Leaning to the side, he pressed himself to Nexilia.
"She was murdered. She wanted so badly to be human, so she never leveled up. She was only a level one, and they killed her. They killed her and wanted to kill the rest of my family. But my dad didn't want my sister and me to go through it, so he saved us, and we found Midnight's Door. I owe my dad my life, so I can't leave him."
A relaxing numbness was spreading through Jacob's body, and his sobs slowed, his tears falling silently.
"I can't leave him because Mom wouldn't want me to break up the family completely."

Nex wrapped her arms around jacob, pulling him close to her. She rested her chin on his head, thinking. She couldn't relate to any of this. Not even the love of parents. She had been an accident they couldn't afford to get rid of. They didn't love her, she didn't love them. They were never bad though...it was sort of like she was living with an older sibling and they're partner. Awkward and pretty void of emotions. Leaving her parents had been easy.
"Jacob, you can't live like this, walking on egg shells. It's definitely not healthy, I had thought of you as no better than a mouse when I first saw you." Nex said. She gazed down the alley, wishing she knew how to help him. She never had friends as a child, except for the comfort of the ghosts. They never had problems, at least none they discussed with her. Advice was probably her worst subject.
"You don't think your family splitting up is your fault, do you?" Nex asked pulling away and gazing up at him. Her slow-moving tears dried instantly on her face and only her gray eyes displayed the guy-wrenching sorrow she felt for this kid. The kid shed met today. The kid she'd tried to give a heart attack, the ended up asking for a hair tie. Surprisingly, he was the first friend Nex had had, that was living.

Jacob shook his head slowly. "I couldn't save my mom no matter how hard I tried, and my sister just wanted to move out. I know my mom would want me to stay with him."
Wiping away his tears, Jacob sniffled a couple times. His lips parted to say something, but he froze, catching a sound.
The snarl of a wolf in the distance. It was a snarl that had become familiar to the boy over the years.
"My dad's looking for me," Jacob whispered. He turned to Nexilia. "You have to run," he told her. "My dad will most likely kill you. He's in his level one form, and that's his strongest. He just wants me home, and he'll think you were causing trouble."
A howl split the air. He had found their scent trail. A new fear of being discovered blossomed in Jacob. He stood up, pulling Nex up with him. "Come on," he said quickly, his eyes locked on the end of the alley where the wolf would appear. He began to walk slowly, waiting patiently for his father.

Nex glanced at Jacob, her eyes wide. Why isn't he running?she thought in shock. But she followed him, mimicking his slow steps. Honestly, shed rather stay and kick his ass, but she'd get Jacob's dad mad, and that wouldn't be good for him. Or for her.
Suddenly, she felt scared. It was just a random, raw terror that seized her as she heard the wolf snarl. She finally realized that he was a powerful, grown, male wolf. She was a young, level 3, Necromancer. Who could barely raise two corpses. Jacob was right. He would kill her. Maybe if she was a level 5, she could win against him. But not now. Not at level 3.
Seeking comfort, Nex stuck her hand out blindly, finally finding his hand and grabbing it tightly. Why isn't he running? she thought again, resisting the urge to run away. Instead she gently squeezed Jacob's hand, comforted by the solid and warmth. She prayed she'd be alright, and that Jacob would be too.
And don't let Jacob leave me...

Jacob took her hand and gently squeezed it. He could sense her fear.
"Run!" he suddenly shouted, just as the sleek black figure of a powerful male wolf exploded into view. Springing off of the wall of the alley, the large canine raced towards them almost silently, except for the low growl rumbling in his throat.
Jacob wasted no time at all in their flee. Trying to be sure that Nexilia would stay caught up without losing too much speed, Jacob kept all of his senses but sight on his father. The wolf's claws scrabbled against the pavement as they turned out of the alley, having no wall to spring from. He growled deep in his throat in annoyance, and his slow put some space between them.
Reaching over his other hand, Jacob grabbed Nexilia's wrist with both hands. "Keep running," he said. "I'll be at your side in a second."
With a loud grunt, Jacob literally threw the young woman forward, off the ground only by a few inches. He had to slow down to shift.
Falling to the ground, he slid into the form of his mountain cat, and tried his hardest to gain enough speed. He felt jaws snap too close to his hind legs, and suddenly a set of paws fell on his hind quarters. Jacob yowled in pain and tripped. The two beasts tumbled and rolled for a yard or two. Jacob shoved his father off with his back legs, and as the wolf was recovering, rejoined Nix at her side.
"Sorry I dragged you into all of this," he panted. "But we have to run out of town. He doesn't come to my den." He glanced up at her for a second. He knew that she hadn't been counting on any of this to happen.
But, neither had he. He hadn't expected to be chased down in a panic. And he hadn't expected to be asked for a hair tie.

Nex willed her legs to move at Jacob's command, and the sound of the wolf behind them lent her strength and energy. She resisted the urge to look over her shoulder, resisted the urge to run away from both Jacob and his father. She just kept running.
Gasping as Jacob -- that puny little kid! -- threw her up a few inches, she finally glanced behind her. Jacob had shifted into a mountain lion, but slowing down had let his father catch up. Without meaning to, Nexilia screamed as both canine and feline tumbled to the ground. Watching, eyes wide, as Jacob managed to shove his father off, Nex glared at the wolf briefly. Then she looked down as Jacob came over to her.
"Don't apologize. I'm the one who refused to leave." Nex said quickly, wishing she could say more, but not wanting to waste precious time talking. "Let's go then." she muttered, watching the mountains in the distance wearily. She wasn't a big fan of mountains, or anything too high up for that matter. But she'd scale the eiffel tower if she needed to, one thing this world had taught her was to learn how to shove your fears aside and do what needs to be done. And she'd just have to climb a rugged, elevated, wild mountain to escape the wolf's jaws. Literally.

Jacob nodded to her, sending his hearing back to his father. The wolf didn't seem out of breath yet.
"Jacob!" he howled at them. "You aren't getting away this time, boy! Might as well stop now."
Jacob felt his mind screaming to obey. Punishments would become more severe with each passing second he didn't listen to his father's orders. His legs throbbed to slow down and stop, but he forced them on.
"Nex," he breathed. "He's going to try to talk you out of running, too. Don't listen to him."
Sure enough, his father's chilled voice followed his sentence. "Who's your friend, boy? Are you already telling her stories about me?"
Jacob glanced up at Nexilia. The question wasn't for him, it was for the auburn girl at his side. But hopefully she would stay silent. Any wrong word could set the wolf off, and then he would actually start trying to catch up. Jacob could hardly outrun him in animal form, and most animals could catch up to a human in no time. His father was holding back, playing with them. He liked the chase just as much as his son did, and he would sometimes even slow to a trot when he would get too close.
It was a game.
"Well, young lady?" Jacob looked over to see that his father had come up next to Nexilia, and was running with his head right at her hip. He was a massive beast, reaching her hip even with his head lowered. He nipped at her fingertips to play with her.
Jacob felt the hair on his body rise, protectiveness flooding through him. "Leave her alone!" he roared, and jumped behind Nexilia, bowling into the black wolf. His father let out a huff, and they rolled out into the street. The wolf let out a sharp yelp as his back hit the road after they fell from the curb.
But his father rolled even more, being sure that his son rolled with him. And Jacob was pinned to the ground by a set of heavy paws. The pressure was directly on his shoulders, and it forced him to take human form once more.
The wolf over him changed to a man. His father found a tighter grip around Jacob's arms, and hauled the boy to his feet. One hand left his arm and grabbed tightly at his hair.

Nexilia took one look at Jacob in his father's grasp and opened her sixth eye without hesitation. Oddly, she could keep all of her eyes open though, and she didn't need those extra moments of meditation. She didn't realize that in the back of her mind, she was raising a graveyard a few blocks away. And all of her "eyes" were combining, moving the slowly rising bodies toward them.
"I suggest you let go of him." Nex said, suddenly feeling very confident. She wasn't scared anymore. Why should she be? He was just a filthy old man who had more bark than bite. Yes, he could become a wolf and scare a poor teenager, but she at least had the balls to pick on someone sttronger than her. It may result in murder, but it's better than abusing your own child.
She took a step closer, wishing she had her heels. They had always been a better weapon. Sharp heels and the added height. A great advantage. Oh well. Nex thought, shrugging inwardly, her hand already feeling the smooth army knife she kept in her pocket. If he tried anything, she wouldn't hesitate for a second to use it.
Just then, a figure came into the street. It only took Nex a second to realize she was staring at a corpse. Then another. Soon she realized what she'd done on accident. "Shit." she swore under her breath, glaring at the small army of dead bodies. They all stared back at her with hollow, vacant eyes. Waiting for their next instruction.
"Um, go home!" Nex yelled, not wanting to deal with an army of the stupid. She knew that they were there to help her. But she didn't know why. Then she remembered what she'd heard about Necromancers once.
We're reckless, and go on impulsess. she thought, a grim smile on her face. She must have raised them when she was yelling at Jacob's dad. But why didn't I need to meditate? she questioned herself, then shrugged. She may as well use them if they're there.
Just thinking the command, without using a particular eye or corpse, she sent them closer to Jacob and his dad. Smirking, she said, "well now I say we're a good match. Me and a dead army, and, well, you. A worthless piece of shit who takes to beating his own son. Do you see me? I'm a five foot three inch tall teenage girl with level three powers and just the dead at my side. Yet I'm still risking myself at your son's expense."

Jacob squirmed in his father's grip, holding onto the wrist of the hand that was pulling his hair. "Don't!" he shouted at Nex. "Don't get involved! You won't win!"
His father howled with laughter at the army of dead that the girl had summoned and at his son. "What a pity that my son hates other people fighting his fights. Takes a little too much after me in his attitude." Suddenly growing serious, he gave a hard tug on Jacob's hair, and the boy cried out in pain.
"Alright, we can have fun," he growled at the girl. Drawing out a knife from seemingly nowhere, he pressed the blade to the side of Jacob's neck. The teenager whimpered in fear, pinching his eyes shut, trying to pull away.
"Me against your army," his father continued, ignoring Jacob's pitiful sounds. "Let's see who will win; ones who can't think for themselves, or a level five shape-shifter."
"No!" Jacob shouted. Nexilia couldn't win!
Suddenly, Jacob's father slithered the knife forward, and put it just under Jacob's chin, reaching around his other hand to unzip his sweatshirt. The knife pressed to his t-shirt and with a quick and painful sweep, sliced down Jacob's chest. It wasn't deep enough to do anything real, but Jacob still screamed in pain.
"Come on!" his father screamed sadistically. "Unless you want me to cut him again?" He pressed the blade back to Jacob's chest, creating another slice.
Hot tears fell from Jacob's eyes, streaking down his face as he split the sound barrier with a scream once more.

"Oh, these?" Nexilia laughed and snapped her fingers. Her army quickly dropped to the ground, like puppets with their strings cut. "they're just for show, honey."
Pulling out her own knife, she cocked her head at him, willing herself to ignore Jacob. He's hurt, yes, but you will be too if you let him get the better of you. As you thought earlier, all bark and no bite. "You wouldn't kill him. Of that, I have no worries. Who else can you belittle and beat just because you can't get a girl. Well, not one that stays for very long I can guess. You know what's sad?" she ended in a question, giving him a happy smile, her eyes not showing any emotion. But behind the silver slates an emotional battle was raging inside her. Not waiting for an answer, she said "Your seventeen year old son has more girls chasing after him than you."
Inwardly, not displaying it on the outside in anything but a quick toss of her auburn hair, Nex winced. That might have been a wrong move. This could go many ways. For one, he might think she and Jacob were dating, or that she was implying he was a loser. Which, she was.
Her grip on her own knife tightened and she risked a glance at Jacob. Just the sight of him crying, vulnerable, exposed. She clenched her fists briefly, then glared back at Jacob's father. Silently, a corpse rose a few feet from behind the two men. Once again, Nex didn't realize what she was doing. Until it was too late. She yelled stop, but she saw her surprisingly agile corpse -- this one looking as though it had drowned -- wrap his cold, slowly decomposing arms around the man's neck. He made a strange hissing sound in the man's ear, a mixture of a snake and a bat. Nex just rolled her eyes, and the back of her mind continued to command her dead. Without her permission.
Another rose, coming over, just as fast as the first. The really young, immature part of her mind probably thought of this. The corpse wrapped his arms around the man's legs. And Nex clenched her jaw to keep from laughing. How she could laugh in a situation like this, she couldn't guess. Taking control of her own dead again, she quickly snapped her fingers, dropping them to the ground again.
"Dumbasses. They never do as their told. Stupid things have minds of their own." she said with a shrug, then stuck out her foot. The new pair of heels one corpse had brought her while the others were busy, caught him in the shin, and Nex heard the impact of her stiletto on bone made her wince slightly. She had her knife ready and wasn't about to give him an easy break. She lunged, managing to slash a rip in his chest, nearing his neck. A thin line of blood rose up, and that seemed to evoke something in Nex.
B-blood... she thought in her head, suddenly feeling hungry. And a sharp pain in her mouth made her wince. Before she could question what was happing, she'd pried the man away from Jacob, digging her fangs into his neck vein. The flow of blood in her mouth, repulsed a part of her, but this new part quickly shoved the feeling aside. All she could think about was filling her odd veins that had weirdly stopped pumping blood with more. Satisfying the burning thirst in her throat.

Jacob tumbled from his father's grasp, clutching his bloodied chest.
The loud scream of his father made his head snap up at Nexilia. What was she... Oh, God. "Nexilia!" he screeched. She was drinking from him!
The older man growled low in his throat, finding a strong hold in Nex's bright long hair. He had brought home a vampire woman before, and she was clingy just like this. She just wanted to be at his neck.
With a grunt of effort, the man gave a hard yank on the girl's hair. He could feel her fangs loosen, but his energy was already seeping away. He wouldn't have enough blood at this rate. She had punctured right over the vein in his neck, a spot no one else had ever hit.
Jacob lunged at Nexilia, looped one arm around her waist, grabbed her cheekbones with the other, and lifted her up and away from him. Her fangs slid from his father's neck, and the man fell limp, falling to the ground with a little sigh.
Not having the time to know if Nex was under control, Jacob released her and crouched at his father's side, pressing his hand over his bleeding neck.
He looked up at Nexilia, desperation in his hazel eyes. He knew his father could easily bleed to death this way. "Please," he begged her softly, "seal it."

Nexilia growled as she was wrenched away from her prey, hissing and getting ready to snap at the interferer. Then she saw Jacob. Something in her blood red gaze changed, softened and the red color faded back to her dull silver. She blinked rapidly and felt the elongated canine teeth retract back into her gums. The only things still the same was her blood and heart. Her heart wasn't beating and she couldn't feel the warmth of blood in her body. But she was breathing fine, she felt stronger than before, and she certainly felt far from dead. Dear God what happened? she cried in her head, then heard Jacobs soft voice.
With the feeling of an ultimate hangover, Nex turned her dazed face to him. She had missed what he said, but by the blood pouring from the man and Jacobs scared face, she could guess. It repulsed her to realize that shed have to lick him to seal the wounds, but she scooted closer and bent her head to his neck, then pulled back as her nostrils flared. She could smell the blood, the beating of his heart drew her in. If she got near him, she would attack him again. And Jacob would try to stop her, and then she'd bite him. She couldn't risk it. Looking with fear in her normally blank eyes, she gazed at Jacob. She didn't know what to do. Panting heavily, craving the familiar thump of her heart beating in fear, she looked back at the blood. And her fangs began to slide back out.
Letting out a wail, Nex crumpled to the ground. Her head in her arms, resting against the cool pavement. Shuddering, she tried to erase the images in her mind of feeding off Jacob. She had become a monster in a minute, a leech, a freak. She had no pulse, but she was breathing. And -- she just remembered having seen this on Jacob and his dad -- she could see auras. She had no idea why, maybe it was being both a Necromancer and vampire that gave her this power. But she didn't care. Because she'd remembered both boys' auras. Jacobs was a dull, pulsing, pleading gray, like his father's. But his father's was fading at the edges.
Slowly raising her head and brushing the tears and hair out of her face, she watched the cruel man's aura fade. It kept winking in and out, and Nex knew he didn't have much longer.
"Jacob I c-can't!" she said, gazing at the wound. She was salivating again, which, she realized, was a good thing. She just needed a way to control herself around the blood, and she could finish it. She needed a distraction or something.
"Jacob, I need to be distracted or something if I'm to do this. Any ideas?"

Jacob's hazel eyes widened. "Of course you can!" he cried. "Um... um..." his thoughts were flying everywhere. He needed her saliva to seal the wound. His eyes searched her.
He could feel the pulse under his fingers growing weaker. Panic flurried in his chest. Leaning down by his father's face, he listened to the slowing breaths. "No," he whispered. His eyes lifted to Nexilia. "Please, he can't die!" he said pleadingly. He would be alone if his father died.
Suddenly, an idea formed in Jacob's thoughts at the realization that Nex was nearly drooling at the smell of the blood. "I know!" he said quickly, and switched hands on his father's neck. He quickly lashed out and wiped a bloody finger under her nose, pulling his hand back quickly.
"Sorry," he said softly, and leaned forward quickly. He smashed their mouths together, and, using his hand to help a little, opened her mouth. He tipped her chin down by leaning closer to her and slightly downward. He flicked his tongue cautiously beyond her teeth, feeling her fangs just barely. He slithered over her tongue and pulled her saliva into his mouth.
God, this is gross, he thought in disgust. His mouth was about one-fourth full of her saliva. Why do vampires have to drool at the smell? This has to dehydrate them! Pulling away from her, he pressed his lips together to hold in the liquid. He leaned back down to his father and spat the saliva onto his wound, rubbing it gently with a finger like a tongue would.
To his relief, it began to shut.
"Thank God," he breathed, leaning back in relief. He glanced down at the bloody mess on his hands.
There's a lot of blood in people...

Nex's eyes widened as Jacob pressed their mouths together. Her first impulse was to pull away, but she quickly understood his intentions. Closing her eyes and trying not breath, which she found quite easy, she managed to control her urge to move toward his neck. When he pulled away she gasped, standing and backing up. She kept moving backward until her back pressed against the wall of a building a few yards away. She was panting and her nostrils flared, trying to catch the scent of blood.
"Oh God..." Nex whispered, covering her face with her hands and dropping to the ground. She wrapped her arms tightly around her knees, hugging them to her body. She rocked back and forth, covering her face with her long hair. She had become a freak -- a monster -- in one night. Now she was a strange Necromancer/Vampire bloodsucking leech, a parasite! She could see auras, raise the dead, speak to ghosts, fight a full grown man with double her normal strength, move faster than most humans, and suck blood. She had no control over herself and her thoughts. Letting out a gut-wrenching sob, Nexilia remembered the images she'd had briefly about sucking Jacob's blood.
"I'm a freak. A hybrid" she muttered to herself, saying the last word with disgust. She was a weird fusion of two different races, who usually never associated. She would be outcasted, like the others. She'd always discriminated against them. Now she was one of them. She would be the outcast, she would be shunned. Fellow Necromancers would look down upon her, Vampires would laugh in her face. No other creature would treat her the same, or associate with her.
"I can't live like this..." she whispered, clutching the sides of her head and holding back the tears that so badly needed to come out. "I almost killed a man."
