Nex breathed deeply, tensed, and noticed that even though she could easily smell his blood, she currently had no desire to drink. It was like she'd pigged out on Chinese, and someone offered her a chocolate bar. She had no desire to eat anything for a while.
She pressed her body against Jacob's, feeling a pang of longing as she felt his heart beat against her still one. She knew that that would be one thing she would never grow used to. Having a dead heart. That was the only reason she liked to feed, her heart would beat for those few moments, reminding her of life.
Closing her eyes, Nex sighed. Her hands found Jacob's and held on, squeezing gently. If someone would have told her before she left her house that she would hunt down a kid, ask for a string, become a vampire, and end up falling in love, she would have had them locked up for insanity. But after finding out it was true, she probably would have hugged that person.
She smiled and kept replaying Jacob's words in her head. He loves me, he loves me, he loves me... she thought happily, she was a monster and an outcast, but Jacob still loved her. He'd watched her almost kill his father, but he still trusted her.

Jacob could have stood like that for ages, holding Nex close and just taking in her sweet scent like a drug. But then he remembered his father laying out cold on the pavement.
Jacob tipped his head back with a soft laugh. "We have to get my dad back to my house before he decides it's wake-up time," he said softly. He kissed Nex on top of her head of auburn hair, and led her down the alley he had flew over to catch her, his hand just above the small of her back.
They rounded the corner, and Jacob slowly left Nex's side, crouching at his father's head. Lacing his fingers into the man's top, Jacob stood, lifting his father half-way. He took a deep breath, focusing his energy down to his fingertips. Suddenly, his father switched from being a human, to an unconscious black wolf, his once sleek fur rumpled and clumped with dried blood.
"There," Jacob said softly, scooping the lighter body into his arms, "he's easier to carry now. Want to come along and help me wash a knocked-out dog?" He smiled warmly.

Nex laughed softly. "It's the least I could do, considering I caused the problem." she said following Jacob. She cocked her head at him and the black wolf. "Do you need me to carry him?" she offered, reminded suddenly of her new strength. It shocked her to realize she could probably carry Jacob and the wolf.
She sighed briefly, dreading how different her life would be. Of course, there was one thing she couldn't find a negative side to, but being a hybrid would take a while to get used to. She could speak to ghosts and raise the dead, and needed blood to live and had amazing abilities and senses. She couldn't believe how ridiculed hybrids were, Nex just realized how strong they are. Combining two races with different powers and strengths created a super race. She was a level four --she had figured that was the reason for her new found aura sense and no need for meditating-- and a level one vampire. Imagine when she was level five in both races.
Nexilia couldn't help but grin. The highlight of her day would probably be cleaning a wolf with her boyfriend.

Jacob paused. "If you really want to, you can carry him. He's kind of heavy," he added jokingly, knowing that she was strong enough to probably carry three wolves with one hand. He carefully handed her the black canine, who was resting silently, his breaths coming in deep sighs, and began to lead the way back to his house.
"Let me know if he starts to squirm at all," he said quietly, looked down at the black wolf in her arms. "I don't want him waking up on you."
The black dog took in an extra long sigh, falling deeper into his sleep state. He obviously didn't mind being carried. It provided him with something he had long felt: An embrace. Jacob knew full well that his father was depressed, and he took pills for it every morning before Jacob even woke up. Jacob could sometimes, when he would come home alone and sober, hear the older man talking to himself. He would be speaking to his fallen wife, saying how he missed her.
Then he would cry.
It made Jacob's heart sink each time he heard his father weep. Such a strong man, and he was just as vulnerable as the boy he beat. But Jacob would dare not come to his door, in fear that his father would strike him again. So he would stay in his room, lay on his bed, and listen until his father finally fell into an uncomfortable sleep before he allowed himself to drift into slumber.

Nex shifted a little, getting comfortable under the weight of the wolf. It was just a slight pressure on her arms, definitely not heavy. She almost sighed again, but figured she should try having a positive look on it.
She nodded at Jacob that she'd mention if he squirmed. She didn't want him waking up either. That could end very badly, especially while he was a wolf. And she a vampire.
I wonder which of my parents had been a vampire. Nex thought, her parents never used their powers, and never really told her their races. She'd assumed they were both Necromancers. She guessed her mom, because her mom had died a long time ago. And she had always acted like she had had a secret. If only she would have warned her daughter ahead of time, to save her from this horrible realization she'd stumbled upon.

After maybe a minute or two of walking, Jacob led Nexilia up the stoop to his home, holding the door open for her. Once she was inside, he closed the door silently behind him, motioning for her to follow him.
Taking her up the stairs, he led her into the bathroom. Painfully slow, he turned the water on low in the tub, and took the large canine from Nexilia's arms. He carefully placed the beast into the tub, rubbing his back gently.
Jacob unzipped his sweatshirt and pulled it off, revealing his sliced shirt. "Well, that sucks," he muttered, and peeled off his shirt, revealing a battered body littered with bruises and scars. Dark violet bruises were especially visible on his shoulders and sides, with deep scars over the back of his shoulders, and one over the plates of his chest. He was so used to them being there, he sort of forgot, and had no idea how Nex would react.
Reaching into a drawer, Jacob pulled out two washcloths, handing one over to Nex with a smile. He put the material under the faucet, and began to wipe the blood from his father's coat, working in gentle circles.
"Be sure you go in small gentle circles," he told Nex softly. "If you rub too hard, he'll start to get uncomfortable."
Leaning back, Jacob looked over at the young woman. "You try," he said softly. He motioned for her to come closer and sit beside him, smiling softly.
Maybe it was weird that Jacob was so careful with his father's sleeping body. Maybe one would think it was odd how Jacob cared so deeply for the man that laid his body to shambles, who kicked him, punched him, slapped him, screamed at him, demanded the impossible from him. But Jacob saw past all of the anger. He could see the reflection of himself in his father's eyes. He knew that his father loved him. Even if he had to beg for mercy for the man to end the torment, Jacob knew that, deep down, his father was screaming apologies with each pound.

"Oh God." Nex whispered, her hands reaching toward her mouth. She walked over to him, staring in horror and pity at the wounds. She wished again for a heart, just to feel it break in sympathy for this boy. He had gone through so much. He was broken and torn, but still had enough strength to smile. It amazed her.
For the moment, Nex forgot about what they were there for. Her eyes were focused on the multiple scars on his back and shoulders. She carefully reached out a hand, pressing her cold fingertips lightly against a dark bruise. Her eyes briefly welled with tears, and she wished she could take away all of the pain Jacob must go through. She also wished she could say she felt his pain, but she had never went through such violent physical abuse. Or emotional. The emotional stress and weight he must carry with him, it made Nex wish all the more she could fix him.
"Does this hurt?" she asked softly, realizing she had laid a hand gently against a bruise. She cocked her head, staring at all of the scars. She didn't know if she would have been able to live through this.

Jacob felt her cold fingers search his body, marveling at the many marks he would be left with for a good portion of his life.
He smiled at her. "They stopped hurting a few days ago," he said softly. "They're just kind of numb now, but the feeling will come back in a couple more days." He took her hand, lacing their fingers together. "Hey, don't worry about them. I'm alright."
He placed the cloth in her hand and led her to the sleeping wolf. He smirked, showing her how to stroke gently against the jet black fur, how to circle around the globs of blood without applying much pressure.
Jacob flicked his eyes over to the wolf's head as he let out a small whine. He held Nex's hand still, watching his father pitifully. The animal let out another high whimper, and he moved his head a little.
"It's alright," he told Nex. "He's dreaming. He does this each time. Makes me wonder what's going on in his mind." Jacob continued to move Nexilia's hand, wiping ar another glob of blood.
He father had always whined in his sleep as a wolf. Maybe he was dreaming of running, or of being alone, of falling, of torture, or even of loneliness. Maybe he was dreaming about his wife, trying to catch her as she fled from him, and he didn't know what else to do but cry for her and hope for her to believe him.

Nex nodded, still worried, but let Jacob lead her to his dad. She couldn't help but smile as he helped her clean away the blood from his father's pelt. She closed her eyes briefly, enjoying Jacob's touch and the feel of fur. Cleaning a sleeping wolf had turned out to be more enjoyable then she had thought. She grinned up at Jacob, managing to forget the scars for the moment.
As she watched the whining wolf, she almost felt sympathy for him. But she couldn't bring herself to feel sorry for the creature who inflicted such pain on his son. She wished she could, but it was hopeless. She was curious about what he was dreaming, though. The wolf looked to be suffering, just his body under her hands told her he was scared or upset. His aura was a feeble gray, a sad color, a longing color. A color similar to the color Jacob had had throughout their 'misunderstanding'. Pleading and sad, it was the exact essence of loneliness.
She glanced at Jacob again, watching his aura. She was relieved to see a soft, sad shade of pink. She could see it in his eyes and aura, even though his father physically and emotionally best him, he still loved him. It was sweet, but she didn't think she could ever understand why.

Jacob smiled lovingly down at Nex. He was glad that she trusted him enough to put her hands on the beast that was trying to kill them earlier. He had been almost positive that she would have pulled back, too uncomfortable to touch the black canine.
After another few minutes, the wolf was cleaned of any blood, and Jacob turned off the faucet. "I'll get a towel," he whispered to Nexilia, standing up from the tub's side and pulling a fresh towel from the cabinets. Out of instinct, Jacob brought the material to his face and silently sniffed it. It smelled clean.
Crouching at the girl's side again, Jacob leaned forward and draped the towel over the wolf's body and gently scooped him up, being sure to support his head.
"Alright," he murmured, rubbing the wolf gently through the towel, "we're about done now. Once he's all dry, I'll force-shift him back to human and put him in his chair downstairs. Have any ideas about what I'm going to tell him?"
Jacob flashed a smile at Nexilia. They couldn't let the man know he had been attacked by a vampire and laid unconscious in the street, and then on the sidewalk, while two kids were solving emotional problems. That would be risky, and his father would never believe it. He was stubborn that way. No one ever attacked him, ever. Especially not level one vampires that were just thirsty and a little out of their mind.
Now that would be a story. A level five shape-shifter being knocked out and almost killed from blood-loss all because of a level one vampire.
I would get my ass kicked if I told him that, Jacob mused to himself.

Nex cocked her head at black wolf. She almost laughed aloud imagining the man's reaction if Jacob told him the truth. Of course, the thought also scared her a little. She knew Jacob's dad would never accept her. It would scare her too much to even face him if he was awake. The guy had just tried to kill her not that long ago.
And you returned the favor. that stupid voice in Nex's head reasoned, sounding smug. [/i]Though, you did get much closer than him.[/i] Nex clenched her fists, not wishing to be reminded.
"I don't know... you could always say he was drunk and ran into a wall or something." Nex offered, grinning in amusement as she pictured that in her head.
Nex's gaze slowly traveled back to Jacob's back. The scars and bruises disgusted her. Not because they were gross imperfections on his body, but because of how they had gotten there. She didn't care if Jacob was bruised, she wouldn't care if he'd had a third eye. It just hurt her to see the abuse Jacob was put through. Seeing the scars and bruises was so intimate, it was like she had peered through a window to see Jacob in the middle of being beaten. Nex could almost hear him cry out, see the tears slide down his face.
Quickly, Nex turned her face from the scars. She almost couldn't bear knowing this dark secret and not being able to do anything about it. She couldn't take away his pain, or stop his dad from hitting him. She couldn't promise him things would get better, because she didn't know if they would. In ways, she doubted it. All she could do was let him know he had a home with her if he ever needed it. She would always have room for him, if he ever felt like he needed to get away. She just hoped he would ask.

Jacob grinned widely. "That will have to do," he murmured. "He was drunk and somehow passed out. If he doesn't believe that, I'll say he brought home another whore that was as clingy as the last one." His eyes shadowed over. He could remember that woman. She had been absolutely beautiful, but once those fangs of hers slid out, she was almost impossible to get rid of.
But, for once, Jacob and his father worked together to get rid of her. "It's just another kill, Jacob," his father had told him when Jacob had fallen into a state of shock at the bloody mess. "It's nothing to lose your lunch over."
Oh, but Jacob had wanted to. He hated his killer instincts. He hated when they kicked in and he couldn't help himself. He had used his level one form - the mountain lion that Nex was stroking - to murder a vampire, one of Nex's kind.
Jacob shuddered and felt his flesh tingle at the uncontrolled thought of Nex beneath him in a bloody heap. He could never do that to her.
Forcing a smile, Jacob looked down at the black beast. "Well, let's get him downstairs. Can you do me a favor and go to the room next door?" he added to Nex. "That's my room. Can you get me a shirt from my dresser? Second drawer down is where my shirts are. Come downstairs once you've got it."
Taking a step towards her, he kissed her forehead and maneuvered the wolf around her, gliding down the stairs.

Nex watched Jacob go for a few heartbeats, then turned and pushed open the door to Jacob's room. The first thing she saw left her awestruck. It was a beautiful drawing of a wolf. On his ceiling. The marker he'd used captured every essence of the beast perfectly. She cocked her head at the amazing drawing, peering at it closely. As the drenched creature pulled itself out of a river, it almost seemed to be laughing.
Finally remembering the reason Nex had came into the room, she pulled her gaze from the ceiling. Glancing briefly around at the rest of the small room, she located the dresser. She pulled open the second drawer, revealing Jacob's plain shirts. She grabbed one and turned, carefully closing the dresser behind her with her foot.
Holding the shirt in one hand, Nexilia grasped the door handle. She turned her head to get one last look at the wolf, then left the room, pulling the door shut behind her. She began to quietly descend the stairs.
At the bottom she found Jacob and stood beside him, holding out his shirt. He gave him a small, tentative smile.
"You're an amazing artist." she told him quietly.

Jacob had carefully placed his father, in human form, back into his favorite chair. When Nex appeared at his side, he took his shirt from her and pulled it over his head, down his stomach. "Um, thanks. I'lll wash it off after I have a picture of it. My dad doesn't like me doing that. But it's a spur of the moment thing that I can't help." He smiled at her.
Jacob turned his hazel eyes to his father at the sound of the man grunting. Panic Fluttered in the boy's chest. Latching onto Nex's wrist, he dragged her out of the room and into the hall. Pushing a finger her lips, his eyes pleaded for her to be silent. His father would only makes that sound if her was waking up.
"Jacob," his father grumbled drowsily. Jacob pulled away from Nex, gesturing for her to stay put, and walked into the living room.
"Sir?"
"What happened?"
Jacob swallowed. "You hit your head, Sir. I cleaned you up a bit and put you back to your chair."
His father grumbled, a sign that Jacob was no longer needed. Turning on his heel, he hurried out of the living room, taking Nex by the wrist and leading her upstairs, to his room.
"I don't want him catching your scent," he whispered to her. He held open the bedroom door and waited until she had entered before he went in, shutting the door behind him.
